چکیده
The good parallel computing properties of sparse-grid solution techniques are investigated. For this, an existing sequential CFD code for a standard 3D problem from computational aerodynamics is restructured into a parallel application. The restructuring is organized according to a master/slave protocol. The coordinator modules developed thereby are implemented in the coordination language MANIFOLD and are generally applicable. Performance results are given for both the sequential and parallel version of the code. The results are promising, the paper contributes to the state-of-the-art in improving the eeciency of large-scale computations. Also a theoretical analysis is made of speed-up through parallelization in a multiuser single-machine environment.dimensional ow problems. Life stages: interactions and spatial patterns.
In many stage-structured species, different life stages often occupy separate spatial niches in a heterogeneous environment. Life stages of the giant flour beetle Tribolium brevicornis (Leconte), in particular adults and pupae, occupy different locations in a homogeneous habitat. This unique spatial pattern does not occur in the well-studied stored grain pests T. castaneum (Herbst) and T. confu...

متن کاملHow Galileo dropped the ball and Fermat picked it up
This paper introduces a little-known episode in the history of physics, in which a mathematical proof by Pierre Fermat vindicated Galileo’s characterization of freefall. The first part of the paper reviews the historical context leading up to Fermat’s proof. The second part illustrates how a physical and a mathematical insight enabled Fermat’s result, and that a simple modification would satisf...
متن کاملTowards a social level characterisation of socially responsible agents
This paper presents a high-level framework for analysing and designing intelligent agents. The framework’s key abstraction mechanism is a new computer level called the Social Level. The Social Level sits immediately above the Knowledge Level, as defined by Allen Newell, and is concerned with the inherently social aspects of multiple agent systems. To illustrate the working of this framework, an...
